What does everyone think about the Apple rumor(maybe its fact now?) going to x86?
Fact. Lower end models will switch next year, the entire line by '07.
Ryan will have to work overtime to get all of those PC's working on OS X!!!
No, no, PC's still won't run OSX. Macintosh hardware architecture is still way different than a PC. The processor itself doesn't really determine in the end how the hardware or even an OS will use it; there are many variables.
There will be differences from today's Macs, of course, mostly for software developers. All attendees apparently got Xcode transition kits at WWDC today.
Jobs' concern (I actually think the guy is just flat PO'd at IBM) at Apple is that PPC processor development continues to fall further and further behind, but my personal concern is for quality and security. G-series processors are more reliable than consumer-grade Intel products, IMO, and the schools have proved this out. It costs more for maintenance and has less productivity to run PC-based systems than Macintosh systems, and a chunk of that has to do with chip failures.
That's the main reason I'm a little uneasy about the transition.
