Between now and 2006/2007 any Mac I buy with a PPC is
basically a dead duck.
Although I enjoy work-a-rounds and circumventing Apple
to get the latest and greatest stuff working on a 8
year old S900, i'm also leery of walking into another
hope-and-pray situation when dealing with upgrades and
such.
I'm feel confident that the PPC will be supported for
years afterwards, but we users in the clone world know
more than anyone else what it feels like to be always
trying to catch up in hardware specs.
so, what do i do? sit on my S900 for another 2 years
or go the same route as my last purchase and snag the
best and last line of PPC Mac for cheap when they have
to dump that inventory.
But why go through that hell again?
It seems to me that my S900 will run great until the
Intel Macs come out. Panther is rock solid and Tiger
offers me nothing i need. Widgets? Gadgets? Geez, i
don't even own a watch.
Software is the real headache. I'm no guru like the
rest of you, but I not gonna buy a new PPC mac when
new software for Intel Macs will be popping up. Being
behind in hardware is livable, but being behind
software is a bigger mess.
Let's see Adobe and Quark get my money with any new
upgrades NOT made for IntelMacs.. hahahahahaha
So it's funny that my first PPC mac i ever bought,
this S900, will be the last PPC mac i ever buy. This
Umax has lasted almost the entire modern day evolution
of Mac-ness and has saved me tons of cash by not
buying new. It has provided me countless hundreds of
hours upgrading and tinkering and wasting of time
(that i enjoyed wasting).
So i ask myself, what's the next intelligent purchase?
the last PPC macs or the first IntelMacs. what can get
me the same buying power as this trusty S900?
Part of me wants to get a dual G5 when the end comes.
just because i have ALL the programs and i'm sure
it'll be current for at least two years after. look
how long the s900 has lasted. but it sure is hard to
put money into a dead end system.
And the real stickler is software. i can't be too
behind in the software curve because i'm a designer
and well, i need to run in the world that designers
run. shoot, for all the stuff i do, i can still do it
on Photoshop 4, Quark 3 and Illustrator 8. but
nooooo.... can't do that when i'm designing. so,
knowing that new apps will come out, i just can't see
myself buying a PPC, no matter how badly, i'd like to
have the last ones ever made.
It's funny, no matter what upgrades and changes Apple
has made, they finally got my money when they went
Intel Inside.
yeah, i'll be one of the first to upgrade to intelMac
once the apps are out. i have no choice it seems.
and don't you think that this intel switch will bring
a huge amount of revenue for apple and mac software
folks? i mean, no matter what you have, G3, G4, G5,
clone, etc. you HAVE to make the switch.
dammit, my new Wacom3 USB better be supported! i have
a wacom ADB and i didn't want this USB tablet, but
there was no way around it.
just a rant.
