Wasn't OSX originally written for the x86 architechure (NextOS ??)
It always has been. Jobs stated yesterday that every piece of
Apple software has always been created in both PPC and x86
versions, so the "porting" is already done. OS X, itunes,
quicktime, FCP, Safari, etc are ready to go. He demoed them all
running on a 3.6ghz P4.
The key here is APPLE software. They have to get all the developers
on board, too.
Fortunately developers who have played nice with Apple's (excellent!)
dev toolset are going to have a very easy time of it. This is the
final nail in the coffin of OS 9...or perhaps I should say 'stake in
the heart'; Classic does not run under Rosetta.
Here are Apple's Universal Build Guidelines :<http://
developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/universal_binary/>
So Apple finally has a 3 ghz machine! Imagine a dual processor P4
machine with hyperthreading running OS X. It would run circles
around any dual G5 Mac.
Um, actually, not really. Real-world benchmarks already show that the
dual G5's were able to keep pace with the faster Pentiums.
The big reason Apple's doing this is to get the laptop line moving
forward with the Pentium M.
THIS is the hardware market companies want to be in. Sales and
margins are higher with laptops than desktops, and since laptops are
all-in one systems, if you want to upgrade, you gotta buy a whole new
box. Same goes for home-oriented systems like the Mini. This is why
Apple's moving aggressively to get those lines onto Intel first: they
make the money.
This is actually the best news from Apple since OS X itself. They
are finally joining the rest of the world. Hopefully the RDF died
yesterday.
Pound per pound the largest population segment on this planet are
bacteria, followed by insects. 'joining the rest of the world' aint
always a good thing!
Apple's got a very hard row to hoe in the next couple of years.
