If I'm right: HD format:1080i(nterlaced) 1920x1080 (HDTV) or 1440x1080 (HDV) Pixels rendered as interlaced. use 1440x1080 (4:3 Format, square pixels) for your renders if you've a consumer HD cam like a Sony HD cam, and if you want to compose your renders over your footage. The most Video-Editing apps are working with this formats: 1280:720p (16:9) or 1440x1080i(4:3) and then the fomat is resized by the outputting hardware to 16:9. (if I'm right, if not please correct me)
