The existing functionality is utterly inadequate. As a medical researcher I use Word and Reference Manager on a daily basis, and the facilities currently available with OOo are, frankly, laughable in comparison. In my department nobody is using Linux or OOo, and the reasons given are always the lack of a decent bibliographic management capability.
