Example of the "automatic" toolbar: Move the cursor into a table, and
the Table toolbar pops up (if not installed in the permanent toolbar
space, which would be even more wasteful). (Likewise for outlines, etc.)
But I find the toolbar worse than useless.
If it merely provided mouseable shortcuts for keyboard shortcuts, the
Table toolbar would be useless, IMHO. But the little functions on the
toolbar are in many cases not good equivalents for the supposedly
equivalent functions obtained through the menu. For example, setting the
a table cell background color:
o If done via the menu { Table : Table Properties : Background }, the
background color fills the cell completely - and that background color
is recognized in the Background palette (the new background color
acquires the default/status border).
o If done via the Table toolbar ("Background Color" icon), the
background color fills the cell *only up to the cell contents
boundaries* - and that background color is *not* recognized in the
Background palette used by the menu. [The palette used by the toolbar's
"Background Color" icon never recognizes /any/ color, whether set via
the menu or via the toolbar itself.
IOW, the toolbar provides not a quicker way to invoke a function
available via the menu, but in fact a different function. I find that
worse than useless. It may also be buggy. But IAC it has no place in my
work environment - let alone insisting on intruding into my work
unbidden. How can I keep these intrusive toolbars from popping up?
