I must admit that I don't really look at that intermediate screen that
pops up when you choose to export to PDF. I will experiment and see if
I can specify the resolution as you suggest

What about exporting something to PDF and then look at the result
yourself? Open it with a PDF viewer and zoom it in a lot. Then compare
it to a PDF that yoy know is a ”HI-RES PDF”. Which one was better?
If the OpenOffice.org PDF was worse, then just increase its
resolution, which you can do if you export via File → Export to PDF…
rather than just clicking the Export to PDF button. I could set the
resolution to 1200 dpi and lower.
Of course the resolution of the final PDF won't be any better than the
resolution of the pictures in it, but I guess that is very obvious for
most people.
As you can see, I am a bit of a newbie to graphic design, sign making, and
the printing industry, and I would really appreciate your help and advice. I
would like to use OOo more in our business(es) if possible.
