You seem to be knowledgeable on this subject, so I ask of you:
I use Forte Agent to view gmane.comp.openoffice.general.
I want to reply to a msg so I need to subscribe. OK
Now that I have responded to the auto-response msg I get many e-mails
to that e-mail address.
I don't want ANY e-mails coming in because I read them via Agent.
....
I'm not 100% sure I understand what you want so let me say what I think you
want and then you can tell me if I'm wrong - I won't get offended ;-)

I think you want to subscribe to [email protected] but read and send to
the list via gmane.comp.openoffice.general without getting e-mails to the
subscribed address.

I think there's some considerable scope for confusion. I've just looked at gmane.org. It appears that they have some sort of subscription scheme that relates only to gmane (http://gmane.org/post.php: the idea is to stop use of gmane for spamming). I wonder if this is the "subscription" to which the op refers. AFAICT he should just get the one message back to confirm his "reality" - so why he's being swamped may be a gmane issue. Perhaps he could check some message headers (if he's not already done this) to see /exactly/ where they're coming from.

If he's using gmane, afaics he should have no need to subscribe directly to the OOo mail list (which rather defeats the point of his gmane access anyway) in order to post to the list.

Perhaps I'll try a test from gmane and see what happens......

As a regular gmane user, perhaps I can shed some light here.
I read it via Thunderbird, so the Forte Agent setup may be different, but if I do a "reply" to a gmane message in a new newsgroup, I get a confirmation - to gmane only, and then I can post to the gmane group ad lib (as I am doing with this). There is no need to subscribe to the email list as well. This is more or less what Mike is saying.
