You are probably saving your files in the default ISO standard ODF
format, which Microsoft refuses to support. You'll have to save in Word
format. You can do this in "Save as", by choosing the appropriate
format from the drop down list. Also, ensure automatic file name
extension is selected.
You can also add ODF support in Microsoft Office, by installing the Sun
ODF plugin.
