I think common English usage would be that the sender's wishes
should be respected if possible. OTOH it's arguable whether list
software should be messing with this field at all - it depends who
you consider the "sender" to be: originator or list exploder.
Oh, but that's a different question: you have changed the word
"author" to "sender"! "Sender" could indeed mean the mailing list
processor, but RFC 2822's "author" (as you correctly quote) is
unambiguous: it just has to be the originator of the message. RFC
2822 is telling us (as you seem to suggest) that mailing list
software has no business inserting or interfering with Reply-To:
headers. And it is only when such software does so (as it does with
this list) that users' mail clients produce the confusing or
inconvenient effects that are being discussed. The mail clients are
only doing as they are told by the standard ...
