Yes, Sue, unless it is a 2007 or 2007 xlsx version of an Excel spreadsheet
file.
The upcoming version 3 of OpenOffice.org will be able to read, edit and save
those xlsx flies. The beta version of OOo 3.0 is already available.

The latest official release of OOo, 2.4.1 reads, edits and saves Excel xls
files.
You can download it for free from www.openoffice.org and install it on your
computer.
Good luck!
