SpamAssassin uses this blacklist and others to determine if the message is spam. Putting the blacklist in the MTA allows the MTA to reject the connection before it even gets the chance to send the spam. This lowers the number of messages that your server (and SpamAssassin) needs to deal with. -- Bowie
