Doesn't quite fit the symptoms. When a webapp calls System.exit(), the following entry does NOT appear in the logs: Sep 26, 2007 1:23:07 PM org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol pause INFO: Pausing Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080 Whereas when the service is stopped or the shutdown string is sent to the shutdown port, the above message does appear in the logs.
