I noticed Canadians do the same for weather and driving. I was in Toronto a few weeks ago and everybody was complaining how it was "in the 30's a few weeks ago and now it's snowing".

But, yes, Bill, the author stuck to metric units primarily. It's just that he himself was not THINKING metric when it came to everyday use, e.g., judging distances. What impressed me about the Australians is that they have gone whole hog. They use metric, not only in trade and commerce, but also in ordinary
parlance.

Damn! I knew I should have read it all the way through. (At least, though, that's consistent with the units used on distance signs, even if you and I would prefer him to be inconsistent on that item--or, rather, consistent
with the interesting part of the article.)

My excuse is that I'm working on a consulting proposal that is due by 15:00
tomorrow (Wednesday).

Oh well, back to work.

Too bad he used "half mile" with respect to the part about Sunrise Bridge.

Quoting Bill Potts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Note the very encouraging use of SI (without parenthetical colonial
units) in the article at http://sacbee.com/101/story/523061.html.

Note, also, that the article was written by a Sacramento Bee staff
reporter.
As a Bee subscriber, I is quietly proud (as Walt Kelly's Pogo used to
say).

So far, I've read no news about any snails being opposed to the use of
the metric system. :)
