Wow, there's a new battery powered mini-howto (well oct 2002). That how to is quite good at starting you off on power saving.
One of the old versions of the document actually talked about dropping your battery on a flat surface horizontally (so it landed flat, not on a end) to break up some of the crystallization problems with NiCad/NiMH batteries. It comes with lots of warnings and lack of warranty, but if the batter really is hosed it might be worth trying.
