Laptops: Most laptops available today will work with Linux. My
Compaq
(1800XL series) is able to run any Red Hat version 7 or later, right
out of the box. That becomes more impressive if I mention that it
*won't* run Windows 2000 out of the box...

Good deals: if you're specifically looking for a Dell, try
www.dellfactoryoutlet.com. Their prices for factory-refurbished
laptops are pretty good, at least relative to their prices for new
ones. If you're not specifically after a Dell, you can get good
deals
on HPs at places like Costco or Sam's Club.

Wireless cards: I've had good results with the Orinoco chipset. The
Prism2 chipset is also reputed to be good. There are several other
chipsets out there that have no Linux support whatsoever, so you will
want to be sure what you're getting. As far as working with BYU's
wireless networks, anything that talks 802.11b should work fine.
