Did you check /var/log/XFree86.0.log for clues? If you freeze your
system, you want to keep that from being overwritten. The easiest way to
do that is=20
startx -- :1
when you're testing, and then look at /var/log/XFree86.1.log which will
be untouched after your reboot.
