Wow... what version of the drivers, x and other associated info do you have??  
this is rather strange, as I've been using the various nvidia drivers for a 
couple of years now, and have had excellent success with them since the first 
couple.

Which card also? does it have a fan or just a heat sink (I've seen some 
chaintechs with just the sink that had serious problems).
