For what it's worth, on my workstation machine, nvidia's drivers freeze
up all the time, even in 2d.  It's either a temperature issue or irq
sharing issue.  I think it's temperature, except that I rarely use
opengl stuff on it, and without the nvidia drivers, my X never locks
up.  When nvidia's X locks up, I can ssh it in and kill X (which is
running at 100% when the console freezes--also the gpu is burning hot). 
The logs have never given me anything useful.
