I've usually lose about one partition a year using PM.  (Note: I do unholy 
things to my partition table for fun)  Nevertheless, I've been very 
pleased that it's there, because without it I would need to burn 
everything to CD's every two months (about as long as I can go without 
deciding to switch distros.)  Usually if PM crashes, it's because of some 
weird thing in the filesystem (NTFS is wacked) that scandisk didn't catch.  
In all my years of repartitioning, I usually lose about 1 in 10? tries and 
get to clean my drive.  We have come a long way though from the days of 
FIPS, and QTParted looks really nice.
