The link Hans sent should work for showing your external ip.  But that
doesn't necessarily explain your ftp experience.  The whole thing should
be transparent to both sides: your computer thinks it's talking directly
to the ftp server, and the ftp server thinks it is talking to the
external ip address.  You could try running ethereal or tcpdump to see
what happens at your machine.
