Mandrake would be one of those distros, in case you were wondering. 
Plug in a usb scanner and an icon for xsane appears on your desktop. 
Plug in a camera, an icon for gtkam appears on your desktop.  Very nice
(and no, Mike, no adds appear along with those icons ;)
