I've had my Latitude D610 for about five months now and it's been a
dream. I got the Intel A/B/G wifi card and it works out of the box with
Ubuntu. In fact, all the hardware is extremely functional, except for
the lid switch. I can't get the thing to suspend on close, but if I
suspend by hand, close the lid, and then open it, it comes back to life.
Oh, I guess I've had trouble with the Radeon Mobile card and compiz as well.

The standard wisdom is that Dell's Latitude line is much more standard
than the Inspiron line. They use the same parts for longer periods of
time, so your setup isn't as bleeding edge and the components might not
be the cheapest out there, but it's much more likely to play nicely with
alternative operating systems. I've had both an Inspiron 8500 and now
the Latitude and my experience seems to agree.
