Subject: Shocks
I received my airstream shocks on Friday. And as I was checking them out I
remembered the discussion of the airstream shocks made for horizontal travel.
When I expanded and contracted them in the horizontal position you could hear
the fluid and air easily swish around and resistance was on short supply, yet
in the vertical position it was quite different. Question #1 isn't the major
difference besides price, the airstream shock designed for horizontal
operation. And question #2 my thought was to go with the bushing removal and
splitting method for installation. Any secrets on how to get the bushing out
of the shock?
Thanks, J.L.Dietz #4361

Hi J.L.,
One secret is to use a hair dryer, set to high heat, at point blank,
right on the bushing. It will eventually soften and it'll make it easier
to push it out with a screw driver, metal rod, or something similar.
Wear gloves, I lost half an index finger nail doing this...not fun.

Lefty,
I thought it was clear but I guess not. What I was trying to say there was
less air flow with the Fantastic Fans and the MaxAir Vents than if the Vents
were not on. IE the best option for air flow would be to only use the Fantastic
Fans. However, as I said in my original post I want the Vents so particularly
during the winter but also during most of the year, I can leave the vents open
and continue to get air flow even if the fans are not running. The idea of
the center vent with a Fantastic Fan would not work on my trailer unless the
TV antenna was up because the end of it rests on the vent cover, and as I normally
use a satellite dish it would not be up.
Cheers,
Don

I'm not sure what you are saying is missing. The "weight distributing =
hitch" is actually welded/bolted to your tow vehicle and probably did =
not come with your trailer. The sway control would have been bolted to =
the tongue of the trailer, and then loose would have been the (2) =
trunnion spring bars with the cams bolted to the ends.
When I picked up my 63 Overlander, it also had the Reese dual cam sway =
control bolted to the tongue, but was missing (1) trunnion spring bar =
with cam. The other bar was there. This particular bar is not the =
current one being sold by Reese but was available on special order. The =
lowest quote I received was about $180 plus shipping.
Then I contacted AZ RV Salvage in Phoenix. I sent them a picture and the =
part #s that Reese had supplied me. One week and $110 later I had a =
perfectly fine, used trunnion spring bar with cam attached that matched =
my other one.=20
I do not know if you can mix the Draw tite bars with the Reese cams, but =
I would be hesitant.

I have a 1973 27' ft, Airstream Overlander which came with a dual cam =

You may want to ask Reese about that. I'm not sure you can mix and match =
distribution bars.
Although I'm not familiar with the Draw-Tite, I've had EZ-Lift and Reese.=
The hitch head for each brand was different (at least the ones I had). T=
he EZ-lift bars attach to the hitch head different than the Reese and the=
shackles were a little different. Never wanted to test it out on the roa=
d and find out. I'd hate to see my trailer pass me on the road.
Their web site is www.reeseprod.com =20
They didn't have a n 800# listed but the have links to email customer sup=

Hi folks:
I have a 1973 27' ft, Airstream Overlander which came with a dual cam sw=
ay control made by Reese. However the weight distributing hitch is missin=
g. According to the information in the Airstream brochure, the tongue wei=
ght of the trailer is 550 lbs. I am able to get a reasonably good deal on=
a Drawtite Weight Distributing Hitch. The Drawtite weight distributing b=
ars are rated for 1000 lbs tongue weight. The Drawtite bars are round at =
the front and tapered towards the back of the bars. They have the groov=
es at the end to fit into the stirrup/cam. =20
Can someone tell me whether this set up will work? Can I use the Drawtite=
weight distributing hitch/bars with the Reese Dual Cam Sway Control? Th=
anks.

Subject: Weight database
Thanks to the VAC list, the '61 Globetrotter project sold
yesterday.
Another topic I have been meaning to post about, is to
collect data on weights of various years and models of
Airstreams. Several friends have had the usual questions,
can I tow x model with y car. And of course the usual
answers go back about every Airstream being different,
erring on the conservative side, etc. etc. but it would
help to have a table of the empty weights. One time I saw
a formula of 3800 pounds for a 19 foot Land Yacht, add
300 pounds for every foot over 19, 100 pounds for the
International model and 200 pounds for Excella. That
seems to be fairly close but who knows?
If this information exists in one place, please let me
know!
I will compile the information I get and post it on the
web. Send year, model, empty weight and source of the
information (owner's book or actual weighing) to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks!

David,
Contact RJ, our webmaster ( [EMAIL PROTECTED] ). This sounds like
something that belongs on the VAC website.
