You can make a copy of the vdi('s) after stopping the VM. Build a new VM with
it using similar characteristics from the original VM in the new VM and start
this VM with the new version.
I do this already some years. The only issue is that you may have another
Ethernet device in the new VM. In the new VM I configured the new Ethernet
device with its own configuration and copied this configuration to the
original VM, which is not used there.
However after stopping the original VM I do rsync the vdi's to the system with
the copy and start it and it will use a different Ethernet device with it own
configuration, which came from the original VM. So this new VM can coexist
with the original one in the same network.
