For every VM managed by VirtualBox you will have a .vdi. This is the
machines HDD image.
The file is probably found in ~/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/
ensure this file is backed up for every VM you have. Then open Virtualbox
and note down any settings you have for each VM.
Uninstall VirtualBox in the usual way. I would now strongly advise setting
up the Debian like repository as this will make your life much easier. I
would also install dkms if you don't already have it.
Now you should be able to re-install VirtualBox through apt-get. If you
want to continue using the .deb then install it as before.
Make sure your .vdi is in the hidden directory as before. Open VirtualBox
and "File -> Virtual Media Manager". Add a new media file and select that
.vdi.
Create a new VM and use all the settings you had in the old virtual
machine. When it asks for a HDD use the old .vdi.
You should have your XP vm working just fine.
