Looks good. Thanks. But there's a transitory heart-stopping
moment:

o Running under 3.0.6, I pkgrm'ed the Guest Additions (is this
  recommended?)

o I shut down the guest.

o I installed 3.0.8 (I didn't uninstall 3.0.6; I assume it simply
  updates.)

o I restarted guest. Screen was incredibly sluggish; it took
about a minute (well, maybe half, but it felt like hours)
for each redraw of the desktop, during which the mouse
  didn't track.

o I re-installed Guest Additions from 3.0.8, waiting as it
s-l-o-w-l-y redrew each window in the process.

o I restarted guest, and all is well.

I experienced the same (mis-)behavior when I installed 3.0.6,
and IIRC, also on a Win XP host.

Is usage of host CPU slightly higher? But not bad enough to
make me want to do multiple re-installs to collect metrics.

Thanks again,
gil
