Nick,
It is a real honor to have you come to the Sowbug, other than have you stay at
our house, we have paid you nothing. You come because you want to and we have
others like you. As I said many times, you tyers is what makes the show.
The show money is used for Scholarships, Environmental projects and donations
to Hooked on a Cure, and other projects like that. This show does not fatten
any ones pocket., maybe that is the reason it is the show that it is. It is a
Tying Show not a vendors show though we do have vendors. We try to have vendors
that sell only tying and fly fishing paraphernalia.

Sometimes I sell them myself... not very many though. I don't have price tags
on them and they are readily handed out for free. But if someone comes with
"Can I buy one for X dollars?", then I don't say "No, either you'll have it for
free or you won't be having it." (with exception for children).
I don't think it's something wrong with selling your flies at shows. As long as
he hasn't offered you expenses like (at least) accommondation and food, I don't
think the host for the show has the right to tell you not to either.
You'll be sitting there as an attraction, HIS attraction. Other people sell
stuff in their booths, but you are a part of the show room. He will be early
with giving out your name, letting people know you'll be there to make them
come to his show... attraction already in text form. People are paying HIM to
see you... you being the only part of the show room he hasn't paid a dime for
himself!!

Silly as it may be, I actually think it's a little annoying to get his "... and
you are welcome to sell your flies too". Not that I plan to do it, but it
sounds like he sees it like doing me a favour. In my opinion: Being there is my
favour to him... and until he has returned that favour, i.e. offered me to
spend the time as a guest and not as a tourist (accomondation and food),
"letting" me sell my flies is not a favour that is his to give.

I can take paying travel expenses. Technically I would say they should be paid
for, though I CAN be realistic too. But accommondation on top of it... if your
only option is to add hotel to your already paid travel expenses, being a part
of the show room can get very expensive.
During the show I did in August I lived in a very luxurious cabin, much (MUCH)
more than I would have asked for. It must have costed a smaller fortune to rent
for a regular tourist, but the host for the show also was the one running that
cabin business, so free for him (but he paid for my $150 train ticket instead).
In April, in Finland (Tampere ice hall), we were offered to stay where they
hosted the visiting hockey players... same building as the ice hall. Small
rooms, each with eight beds (four bunk beds), and sharing showers.
To me, staying in that simple room was just as good as (btw with only ONE of
the other tyers) staying in that two-floored luxurious cabin... offering sauna,
terrace with an astonishing view over Siljan, huge flat-screen TV, DVD-player
and even a bunch of movies. It's a place to STAY FOR FREE... roof over your
head and room temperature. If I was given the offer, I could probably even
settle with a camping mattress, sleeping in the show room (though I accept that
the security factor makes it impossible for the host to offer this).

As long as the numbers of tyers (like Sowbug) aren't too steep, I believe: If
someone is capable to host a fairly large fair, he is also fully capable of (if
not for free, then at least cheap) arranging something so he can offer you SOME
kind of accomondation too. If not luxurious, then at least simple. If he
doesn't have this to offer you, then I don't think he has cared to try... and
if he hasn't cared to try, then I don't think he appreciates the tyer's favour
to him...

... and then I certainly don't think it's his place to decide whether or not
the tyer should be allowed to sell his flies.

My 2 ¢ worth
... which I also can see as reasonable show expenses. LOL

/Nick

i've never heard of any rule bout not sellin' your flies at the
Sowbug......i've sold flies there.

we've done the FFF Internationl every year since 2002 and that's one place they
don't want you to sell your flies..........but most of us who have a buyer for
something at that show.........just do business up in our room of the
hotel........or out in the parking lot.........or in the hotel
lobby..............anywhere but on the showroom floor..........

we've also done the Southern, Southeast, Great Lakes, Florida, Gulf Coast,
Oregon, Washington, and Notheast, FFF Council Conclaves and have never been
asked not to sell............at the East Idaho Fly Tying/Fly Fishing Expo they
just give you a tax form to fill out, and you have to charge tax and give it to
the organizers of the show if you sell..........and they get it to the
state........i guess.

it's also no problem at all the east coast shows.............you gotta be able
to sell, in order to try and defray some of your expenses...........man it cost
a small fortune to do shows all over hell and back...........one reason we
started cuttin' back this year.....sorta, lol.......and will continue to do so
as time goes by.........more and more each year...........cept for next
year...........kinna, lmao...........

What really cheesed me off was when I found Terry and Roxanne Wilson selling
flies from their demo station at Sowbug. I was under the impression that was
not kosher.

Jeff, you've never been to the shows in the east.........there, you might have
a half dozen of the BEST Atlantic Salmon fly tyers on the planet, all seated in
a row or real close together........and trust me.......even though they be
takin' all dang day to do one fly.............there's a dang good reason they
don't just give 'em away. Once those puppies go in a frame, they can sell them
for upwards of $400 each.....and they DO. Next time you come over.....you'll
have to make some time to come UPstairs. i'll show you a bunch of 'em.

I thought everybody gave them all away for somebody that would sit and learn
the pattern. I found out that was not the case. I suppose folks have their
reasons. It's not like it's a piece of furniture or something really valuable.

Could not pass up the low water this morning. Went fishing and got skunked..
That is the first time getting skunked in years.
I always give away all the files I tie at the tie-in's and at any shows I do.
