Tony, we did 30 events in '08 alone.....this year we're back down to 17, and
having just cancelled the last 3 for the year, we end up at 14. It cost us over
$5K just to do the show in England this year in Feb./March...........Misa's
trip to Scotland/England in June was more than that, as rental car fees for
over three weeks were part of the deal.....

We spent over $20K in gas alone in '08. So while it doesn't even cover 10% of
our expenses.....we sell every fly, pin, drawing, and anything else we can, at
every show we do. And write the rest off.....a creative accountant helps.

Anybody space the time change.....put your clocks back an hour.

Jeff,
I really want to stay out of this but here are a few things to consider. When I
started the Sowbug, I had allowed that the tyers could sell their flies at
their stations. It was agreed by the committee. Then we decided that there
should be a central place to sell the flies. All tyers that wanted to sell
flies would give the flies to a designated member who would set up a station to
sell their flies. Of course, this became a hassle so the tyers went back to
selling their flies from their stations. At that time we only had a couple of
vendors, some were resorts, not fly tying related. I don't know what the policy
is now about selling at the stations as I am not involved with the policies of
the show anymore. The Sowbug show pays no one to participate, not even the big
names that come. All we do is give all a BBQ on Friday night.
As for selling at the big shows, I had to sell flies in order to participate in
the shows. It would cost me up to 400.00 to do a show back East. That would not
include my materials.
Transportation would be close to 100.00, motel rooms close to 100.00 a night we
would not even get a sandwich for doing the show. What I spent was out of my
pocket so selling flies would make up part of the cost. If I was not there I
could not educate the people on the flies I was tying, so it was selling flies
to do the show or stay at home.
It is a catch 22.
I don't sell flies at the shows I do now though it still costs me money out of
my pocket, the last out of state show this past May cost me 300.00.
You do the Sowbug and it does cost you to come down here and tie at the show.
If it were not for tyers like you, there would not be a show but consideration
has to be given to tyers that might do 10 shows a year. It can add up in
dollars. This is the reason I quit doing the big shows, It was just costing me
too much out of pocket money.
Tony

Chuck, I'm saying vendors pay for booths for the privilege of selling at that
show. Not saying they give books away. Of course not. I'm not sure where you
drew that conclusion. I'm saying is it cool for me to sell sandwiches at my
tying station?

Jeff: i kinda understand the flies. But are you saying the Wilson's should just
GIVE their book away??? I'll tell ya, I have a book on that same subject about
half way (or maybe a little more) finished, and unlike a fly, on a book you
have THOUSANDS of hours put into it. Not to mention publishing costs which are
through the roof. Chuck

My opinion is that at Sowbug and Conclave, you are providing an educational
experience. I suppose if a person wanted to sell stuff, there are vendor booths
available. If I can sell flies, why can't I sell material and hooks? It's just
a fly that's not assembled yet. I'm not railing on you, just the idea. Wilson's
are not selling anything special anyway. I've got them on selling their books
from the table as well.

i've never heard of any rule bout not sellin' your flies at the
Sowbug......i've sold flies there.

we've done the FFF Internationl every year since 2002 and that's one place they
don't want you to sell your flies..........but most of us who have a buyer for
something at that show.........just do business up in our room of the
hotel........or out in the parking lot.........or in the hotel
lobby..............anywhere but on the showroom floor..........

we've also done the Southern, Southeast, Great Lakes, Florida, Gulf Coast,
Oregon, Washington, and Notheast, FFF Council Conclaves and have never been
asked not to sell............at the East Idaho Fly Tying/Fly Fishing Expo they
just give you a tax form to fill out, and you have to charge tax and give it to
the organizers of the show if you sell..........and they get it to the
state........i guess.

it's also no problem at all the east coast shows.............you gotta be able
to sell, in order to try and defray some of your expenses...........man it cost
a small fortune to do shows all over hell and back...........one reason we
started cuttin' back this year.....sorta, lol.......and will continue to do so
as time goes by.........more and more each year...........cept for next
year...........kinna, lmao...........

What really cheesed me off was when I found Terry and Roxanne Wilson selling
flies from their demo station at Sowbug. I was under the impression that was
not kosher.

Jeff, you've never been to the shows in the east.........there, you might have
a half dozen of the BEST Atlantic Salmon fly tyers on the planet, all seated in
a row or real close together........and trust me.......even though they be
takin' all dang day to do one fly.............there's a dang good reason they
don't just give 'em away. Once those puppies go in a frame, they can sell them
for upwards of $400 each.....and they DO. Next time you come over.....you'll
have to make some time to come UPstairs. i'll show you a bunch of 'em.

I thought everybody gave them all away for somebody that would sit and learn
the pattern. I found out that was not the case. I suppose folks have their
reasons. It's not like it's a piece of furniture or something really valuable.

Could not pass up the low water this morning. Went fishing and got skunked..
That is the first time getting skunked in years.
I always give away all the files I tie at the tie-in's and at any shows I do.
