Either how long to hold the chord - or possibly whether to play it once or
twice. Twice when there is a 2.

So the numbers tell you how many beats to hold the chord for? That is kind of
cool. They don't have to worry about aligning with the notes so much, - which
they never seem to be able to do properly anyway.

However I have one very interesting example where as well as putting in
the letters there are figures to tell you how long you should hold the notes
for.
