I understand that such visual changes are almost always controversial,
especially for such a long-lasting editor with its big community.

I'd argue that this patch makes the fold and sign column work as the
number column is working already -- stopping at the end of the buffer.

The functionality of these columns is to signify information about
certain lines, but since there can't be anything after the end of the
buffer, why should there be a column in the first place?

Moreover, the end is also indicated via ~ markers, so you could say
that some redundancy is removed.

On the other hand I think that some people won't like the change,
since it's really just cosmetic and brings nothing new to the table,
neither a fix nor a "useful" feature.

I know of at least one person who would like to see the exact
opposite; making the number column continue after the end of the
buffer, so that the ~ markers are always aligned with the actual start
of the lines in the file.

So, yes, the users should decide.
