When I was a kid we had a Mac Plus with only a floppy drive, and it
was customary that we would use a boot floppy which would create a RAM
disk, copy the system files to that, then eject the boot floppy,
allowing the drive to be used for an applications/documents floppy. I
just booted up one of those old boot disks and found out that it was
running System 6.0.4 and used a program called "RamStart 1.3" by
George A. Nelson (20 Aug 1986!) to create the RAM disk during startup.
It's rather convenient, as it does everything even before the Finder
loads. The contents of the boot floppy:

Finder (6.1.4) - 107k
System (6.0.4) - 348k
Finder Startup - 1k
General - 13k
ImageWriter - 38k
Keyboard - 2k
Mouse - 4k
Multifinder - 50k
Pyro! - 10k
RamStart 1.3 - 31k
Sound - 4k
Word Settings (4) - 2k
---------------------------------
Total Used: 620K
