Keeping the machine and peripherals out of direct sunlight might help preserve 
the unit as well.

If you leave it sitting out on a desk, perhaps a dust cover would be a good 
idea?  Kensington made one for compact Macs as part of a "Maccessories Starter 
Pack," but I don't know if the kind of thin plastic used in such dust covers 
would be viable for more than a few years.  

It would be neat to have a vintage dust cover for your vintage Macintosh, 
though. :)

Alternately, you might use one originally made for an old CRT monitor (or buy a 
suitable generic "computer dust cover").
