Dug my old macs up from their not so perfect storage (dry at least!) and one of the drives was like that - Turns out it was just full of fluffs.. the dust bunny type ;^) and was slightly misaligned to the slot in the front.. not sure how but when I took it all apart, cleaned and reassembled, it perked right up.
Never bought a special tool for it. Took a metal file to an old longshanked flat blade screwdriver and, testing on the screw hidden in the battery compartment on the back, refiled until it worked, then dove in, albeit carefully, ahem. Bruce techduck.ca "Still a hobbiest after all those years." ps. not much to see here but someday.. b.
