Thanks I think you are probably right it is rather dusty and I can only imagine 
what has happened to the originaly grease and oil over almost 30 years.

Dug my old macs up from their not so perfect storage (dry at
least!) and one of the drives was like that - Turns out it was just
full of fluffs.. the dust bunny type  ;^)  and was slightly misaligned
to the slot in the front.. not sure how but when I took it all apart,
cleaned and reassembled, it perked right up.

Never bought a special tool for it.  Took a metal file to an old
longshanked flat blade screwdriver and, testing on the screw hidden in
the battery compartment on the back, refiled until it worked, then dove
in, albeit carefully, ahem.
