Thanks I think you are probably right it is rather dusty and I can only imagine what has happened to the originaly grease and oil over almost 30 years.

Took a metal file to an old longshanked flat blade screwdriver and, testing on the screw hidden in the battery compartment on the back, refiled until it worked, then dove in, albeit carefully, ahem.
