I do stand corrected. When I purchased my Apple TV, I could have sworn it
was a 2nd generation, but looking at the model number on the bottom of the
unit, it is indeed a 3rd generation and you are right, that is why I do
still have YouTube on mine.

Subject: RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Hi,
OK, so I checked into this Youtube thing a bit more and on second generation
Apple TV they are definitely gone, anybody who claims otherwise probably has
a third generation Apple TV. I also found out that the third generation
Apple TV which was originally released in March of 2012 had a small update
(not sure what that was) and a Revision A was released in January of 2013.
It appears that Youtube is still available on the third generation Apple TV
and I thought that is what I had, but apparently I have only a second
generation Apple TV. I sort of remembered this now because when the third
generation Apple TV came out I was debating whether I should buy one, but I
believe one of the few improvements was that it can stream in 1280P whereas
the second gen can only do 720P and to me that was not very important.
Anybody who wants to check, here are the actual model numbers which would
tell you exactly which one you have including the first generation Apple TV
which came out in 2007 and was available with a 40 Gb or 160 Gb hard drive
and which probably not too many people have any more.
Below the model information I am pasting two links which talk about the
Youtube thing:

• Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n)
Apple TV (2nd generation)
Year introduced: Late 2010
Color: Black
Model number on bottom: A1378
Model Identifier: AppleTV2,1
Ports and interfaces:
• HDMI (720P)
• Optical audio
• 10/100BASE-T Ethernet
• Built-in IR receiver
• Micro-USB (for service and support)

Actually Youtube is still available and working to my knowledge on the third
generation, now entry level, model.

Primarily it is the SIRI capable remote and the fact that the new Apple TV
has access to its own app store.
I also would assume that eventually there will be new content which may
not be available on the third gen Apple TV. One example already is
Youtube. As of a few months ago the Youtube app is gone from the old Apple
TV and while you could still watch Youtube on your TV via the Apple TV by
playing it on your iOS device and sending it to the Apple TV using
Airplay, it is nice to just sit on the couch and check out Youtube content
on the Apple TV. For me that alone is almost worth it and combining it
with having access to voice control via SIRI and an app store which has
huge potential means I just ordered my new Apple TV from the Canadian
online Apple Store using the Apple Store app.
For once Apple is not price gouging like they are doing with the iPhone 6S
and 6S Plus on contract. The 64 Gb Apple TV which is $199 US is $269
canadian and at 30% more that is right in line and actually maybe a few
percent better than the current exchange rate.
If you go for the 32 Gb option for $149, it’s only an extra $80 more than
the third gen Apple TV and if you are a first time buyer I think it’s a
no-brainer.

Sieghard

boy they need to add a lot for the difference in price. You can get an
Apple TV 3 for $69 and it offers lots of content. More than I have time to
use personally and I have no problem with the included remote or with the
remote app on the IPhone. It will be interesting to see what the added
features are.
Thanks for the info.

Hello I too am interested in the apple tv and have been researching. I
want to get rid of my cable as well because the price is just too much for
what it offers. Where can I find out what is available on apple tv? Should
I just google it?
Thanks

I would look up Apple TV on the internet and see what the advantages
of having one are. I cut cable a long time ago, because many of the
channels that cable offers are things I just don’t watch. With Apple
TV, I pay for a NetFlix subscription and a Hulu+ subscription and get
a lot of content just with those too. I enjoy other applications as
well, such as Lifetime, A&E, YouTube, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. There is so
much available, on the 2nd generation alone there are 71 apps, not
counting all the content you can access through the iTunes store, and
the new generation is supposed to have so much more. I am looking
forward to Voice Recognition and playing around with Siri. I would
rather have a Roku as Roku offers tons and tons and tons of channels,
but the Roku has no VoiceOver or any other speech which makes it
toally useless for a blind person. Apple TV, with VoiceOver enabled,
is a great set top box for a blind individual. I can’t wait to see
what all the new version does offer
.

Besides the easy way to look at the menus, can't one just get all those
channels through their normal television sets?
I know this isn't in all states and countries, but some cable companies
are now having accessible ways to use menus through the television set
itself.
Got to see it in action when I went to visit family a few weeks ago.
Just trying to see the difference.
I mean also besides the menus, the person can listen to music and do
pictures, but well, streaming pictures through my television set won't
work.
Just some curious questions.
Never seen an apple TV in action, and for me, it just seems like just one
more thing to hook up to your television.

Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
It's an honest mistake. When people hear about Apple TV, Google TV, or
Android TV, they picture a big screen television with special features.
While a Google TV needs its own explanation, an Apple TV is a small
network media player that can stream both from your home computers and
from online.
Apple TV is a small device ( similar in size and appearance to the Roku
Box or Amazon FireTV) that uses an HDMI cable to connect to your
television.
It also uses Wifi (or Ethernet) to connect to your home network and the
internet.
The purpose of Apple TV is to provide users with the ability to stream
media, such as photos, movies and music from iPhones, the iTunes store, or
from other partners like Netflix, HuluPlus, and more recently HBOGO or
HBONow, to enjoy on your TV and home theater audio system.
The Apple TV has VoiceOver on it so blind people are able to navigate the
device and play all provided content. I have had an Apple TV for several
years now and I am able to use it without any sighted assistance with the
use of the VoiceOver feature. The new Apple TV is supposed to be so much
better than the one I have, which is the 2nd generation.
