Hi Mary, I think many Soundbars use the optical Toslink connection to receive sound from the TV or a receiver. Anyhow, My Sony is I think 8 or so years old and while it has 2 HDMI ports which data back to whatever version of HDMI was going then, I use the optical out to connect my Sonos Playbar and I have no issues with audio dropping out or Voiceover being choppy.

I found about this arc by googling HDMI pass-through, because somebody had said, actually I think more than one somebody, that having HDMI pass-through would probably solve my problem. Having never heard of HDM I passed through, I'm having no idea that a sound bar might have an HDMI input, I learned some stuff. But precisely how it all works, I still don't understand. It has to do with the audio somehow getting back to the TV. And it has to do with making sure the full surround signal gets out to the sound bar. But like I say, I really don't pretend to understand it exactly. I do know that the old receiver we had did not have this HDMI return, so we do have common links between the problem now and the problem with the older TV. That is to say, no HDMI return in either case, and relying on optical output in both cases. Different speaker set ups completely as you might imagine, since the older set had surround, and this is just a sound bar with the TV. So, it is just a guess, but it seems to fit my circumstances. Sorry for the lousy answer. And it needs one to have it. Also, I have read that if it is arc, on the HDMI it should say Ark on the TV as in "HDMI arc" or something like that. We have three or four HDMI ports, and none of them say that. So I therefore I conclude I don't have it. Even if the TV had it, the sound bar not having it is a dealbreaker. Or so I understand. What kind if you don't mind my asking? Someone on another list of suggested that they had a similar problem with a surround sound receiver that they were controlling from a computer. On their computer, they were able to disablesome kind of energy saving on their HDMI port to which the sound source was connected. That solves the problem. I had my cited husband looked all through the menus on our TV, and there does not seem to be anyway to disable any sort of energy thing on anything on that TV. So I would like to hear what set ups people have who are not experiencing this cut out thing. When Apple TV is connected via HDMI to our TV set and the audio goes to the TV speakers, which are awful, there is no problem with voiceover. When the sound bar that we have is connected to the TV via digital optical cable, and there is audio coming through it on a more or less steady basis, such as when playing the TV show or something from Apple Music, and you Errol around or use the remote and here voiceover, there is also no problem. It does not cut out. When, however, there is no audio except for voiceover, there is a cut out problem. You can use the remote or arrow around with a Bluetooth keyboard, and the first several syllables or words are missed. So there is some kind of delay happening somewhere apparently within the sound bar, which causes the first few syllables of voiceover to be missed when audio isn't already being played. I hope that made sense. I had this problem before with a second generation TV and surround sound system, where things were going through an AV receiver and the same problem happened. What is it with this audio cut out thing? How are people getting around this? My sound bar is klipsch, supposed to be a good one. We try this on a different older TV, and the same thing happen. So it's not something with our TV outputs. I would say it is the sound bar, except I had the same problem before I'll be at with an older AppleTV.
