I don’t have an iPad, but is this columns feature the same thing as containers?

That is the point of the larger screen. That is also why I personally do not want one. When I was teaching, working with clients who had iPads, the columns gave them the most difficulty. Even if you lock the orientation in portrait, there are still times where you have to deal with the screen being in two columns. But, that is also the strength of the iPad, in that you get a better sense of how screens are realy arranged especially on the web. With the mini, having a smaart keyboard folio case is possible, but you end up with a pretty small keyboard that is not in standard layout. You could buy a larger iPhone, like the iPhone 11 pro, or max, and just not have a SIM card and use it as an iPod type device. Have you thought about just using your phone to do what you need to? You can get some nice little portable keyboards for the iPhone which might be helpful to you.
