I have my iPhone automatically backed up to iCloud, but I also periodically perform a manual backup to my PC with iTunes. this extra level of security is explained in the Apple article on choosing an iCloud or iTunes backup at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262

Hi,

I guess it depends. In raw speed/transfer rate I guess. But, I think this is
kind of trivial because an iCloud backup for me only takes less than 2
minutes on average. And since it can be set to do it automatically when
charging, the convenience factor goes way up. Just set and forget. Plus, I
don’t have to actually be near my computer, plug it in, and launch iTunes.

Hi,

I've never used the iCloud backup, but is it not slower than using iTunes on
one's computer or via wifi?

Hi,

I know this doesn’t really answer your question but, why not just have your
device backed up to iCloud? In my opinion, its so much easier, and
convenient than backing up on your computer. You don’t even have to do
anything. If on Wifi, it will perform a backup every time you charge your
device.
