Joanne, Actually, tripods exist which clamp around the sides of the iPhone rather than using the 30-pin slot or lightning slot. Amazon has a wide selection of different types of these tripods.
I purchased a small tripod last year, but it does not have a clamp to secure it to the surface. Unfortunately, this means it does not meet my needs.
