Hi Richard, If all you want to do is stream purely audio programming, such as your iTunes, or other audio sources through your Apple TV to the sound bar, you don't need a TV. However, if you want to watch something on the Apple TV which has a video component, such as Netflix, or some other video thing, then yes, you need that TV connection. Or the thing won't work. It needs to see the video. That doesn't mean you have to use the TV for your audio. But it does mean you need the HDMI from your AppleTV to the television. This is true for my first generation Apple TV. I have no reason to think it would be any different for the second generation, but I can't prove it. When I looked up the differences, the only thing I found was at the second-generation let you have a higher video then what I have, 1080 P versus whatever it is I have that I don't remember. Mary
