Why does the image appear stretched within the surface of the film? This only makes sense if the actual particle has a great deal of width at right angles to its motion through the film. Am I missing something here?

Assuming for the moment that they are real tracks, then the assumption that all the energy of the particle is kinetic may not be valid. If they have rotational energy as well, then the energy/momentum calculation could be off, and consequently the conclusion that they are superluminal could be wrong.
