That's one of the reasons I think they are scratches. Also, as someone else tried to point out during question time, the track doesn't appear to weaken along its length. That would be typical of a scratch which would only stop when the object ceased to make contact with the surface. Furthermore, 4.5E14 eV is about 7E-5 J, which doesn't seem unreasonable for a scratch.
