Well done, so the signal generator is now the principal suspect... If I may I'll suggest an anomaly criterion less stringent than Robin's self powering scheme but still interesting in terms of practical applications, especially for third world lighting needs: Build two portable lights with the same LEDs at same brightness, powered from identical new batteries from the same manufacturing batch, one based on Ron's scheme (with integral sig gen), and the other based on a conventional white LED driver, and see if Ron's beats significantly the conventional one in terms of battery life.
