Bottom line: All the Godes/BEC are required to do - in order to silence the skeptics (and at the same time receive all the funding they can ever use) is to demonstrate conclusively the appearance of Helium in the ash.
Due to the lower cost of helium leak analyzers (compared to full featured
spectrometers) this is (possibly) not hard for them to do - even on a
restrictive budget they can rent one.

one reason for double beta decay can be about (zero)
momentum conservation
so it is 3 electron capture (inverse beta decay) and 3
neutron capture, finishing by 2 or a double beta+ decay (which?).
in fact the vision proposed is : there is numerous inverse
beta decay, for some reason...
this stream on neutrons is absorbed by near nucleus, and if
optimized, by hydrogen isotopes until 4H
4H created decay quickly to 4He ...
as Brillouin says, it is also possible tha neutron get
captured by metal if hydrogen does not do it earlier (because too few H,
because to many 4H/4He, because bad quantum state of H)
