Krugman and others think this deficit issue has been hyped by people who want to use it as an excuse to reduce programs they dislike. Right wing people want to reduce social spending; left wing people want to reduce military spending. I think that if you oppose an expenditure, you should propose reducing it, and not point to the deficit as a reason. Anyway, this is getting off topic. - Jed
