Probably not. It's more likely that there's a software problem on the
affected macs that causes them not to properly pick up the DNS
information supplied by the ISPs. Maybe manually entering the DNS server
information works around the problem. This is just guesswork, as I
haven't read up on the issue, but seems a reasonable explanation for why
a fix like that would work.

By the sounds of it, the best thing is to leave *nothing* unspecified.
