Hi Kyle,

First, thanks for the heads-up on EyeTV3 it would have been a real pain to
pay for the upgrade & then find I had to go back to EyeTV 2 to get it to
work!!

OK  finally some progress!!

Forgive the (very) long posting but it may just help clarify the
problems/issues - I composed this email as I progressed so hopefully it
gives a good record of the steps/problems/results:

Starting with Kyles instructions, I gave it a try:

* Uninstall using EyeTV Reporter
* Reboot iMac
* Check EyeTV no longer in apps folder OK
* Check /Library/Application Support/EyeTV  folder still there - delete
* Check ~/Library/Application Support - no EyeTV folder
* Check System preferences, Accounts, login items no EyeTV helper
* Empty trash
* Re-installed EyeTV 2.5.3
* Launched EyeTV the EyeTV setup assistant starts leave open but do not
proceed at this point
* Check finder:
>>  /Library/Application Support - no EyeTV folder
>>  ~/Library/Application Support - no EyeTV folder
> Presume that this folder is created during the set-up process?
* Check System preferences, Accounts, login items still no EyeTV helper
is this perhaps installed during the set-up process
* Check inside the EyeTV application package EyeTV Helper is in the
Resources folder
* Quit EyeTV
* Shut down computer
* Unplug all USB devices and then re-plug:
>> Elgato EyeTV Hybrid (Previous Generation) into the USB port closest to the
>> FireWire 800 port.
>> Wired keyboard into another USB port (did not note)
>> UPS USB connection into another USB port (did not note)
* Start up the computer - EXCEPT it didn¹t start!! - Got the chime, got the
white screen but no ³counting clock² - left it for quite a while but finally
switched off with the power button.

Now I¹m panicking thinking I¹ve bricked my iMac (about 2 weeks after
warranty expired!) - however, I disconnect the EyeTV and UPS USB plugs (just
the keyboard now) and try re-starting and it starts up OK. I run disk
verification and repair permissions (yes, I know it doesn¹t sound like it
was a disk problem it didn¹t get as far as looking for a system disk but
it can¹t hurt eh? - everything looks fine)

Then to make sure the EyeTV hasn¹t just died I try it on the MacBook Pro I
get a repeat of the previous problem where it keeps telling me it is plugged
into a USB 1 port and needs to be plugged into a USB 2 port I¹m finding
this very confusing, system profiler shows me 5 USB busses and 2 USB high
speed busses but it seems that the 2 USB ports get switched between the
busses as the system thinks appropriate eg I plug the EyeTV into a port
and refresh the view and it shows on a USB bus (low speed) - then I remove
it and plug in a flash drive (same port) and refresh the view and it shows
up on a USB high speed bus eject the drive, plug in the EyeTV and refresh
the view and it¹s back on a USB bus (low speed) - I tried this a few time,
in both ports, with the same result. I restarted the computer and tried
again same result. Finally, I shut down the computer, plugged the EyeTV in
and THEN restarted this time the EyeTV shows up on a USB high speed bus
and so EyeTV works fine I change channels and even unplug and re-plug the
EyeTV (with EyeTV running) and there is no problem.

I¹m not sure exactly what the MacBook testing shows/proves but:
* There seems to be some problem with the Macbook connecting the device onto
the right bus
* Once the EyeTV Hybrid is correctly connected to a USB 2 bus, it is still
working OK

I must admit, after my scare with the iMac, I nearly gave up at this point!
However, I hate to be beaten by a machine so I persevered:

* Shut down iMac
* Unplug all USB devices and then re-plug:
>> Elgato EyeTV Hybrid into the USB port closest to the FireWire 800 port.
>> Wired keyboard into next USB port.
* Reboot the iMac this time it boots OK
* Check System Profiler the EyeTV is now showing on the USB bus (they are
both high speed on the 27² iMac)
* Open the EyeTV application and I can now proceed with set-up and auto-tune
 which all works OK.
* Check System preferences, Accounts, login items EyeTV helper is now
there.
* Check finder:
>> /Library/Application Support - EyeTV folder now present
>> ~/Documents/EyeTV Archive folder now present

So, at this point, I know that this particular EyeTV hybrid WILL work with
my 27² i7 iMac but I have none of my other USB devices plugged in. Before
I start adding other USB devices, however, I decide to check if the device
will still be recognised/connected if it is unplugged/re-plugged while the
computer is running (note I have the tuner plugged into the short extension
cable that ElGato provides so I am plugging/unplugging from this cable,
not from the actual port at the back of the computer) :

* With EyeTV software running unplug & re-plug the picture picks up
where it left off no problems.
* Quit EyeTV unplug & re-plug EyeTV launches (my preference setting) and
the picture picks up where it left off no problems.
* Unplug EyeTV, restart the iMac and re-plug - EyeTV launches and the
picture picks up where it left off no problems.

So it now seems that, once correctly set-up and working, the EyeTV is happy
being plugged/unplugged, and it doesn¹t seem to matter if it is connected
when the computer is booted up. Then, with EyeTV running, I connected up, in
turn:
* the UPS USB connection
* the external USB drive (powered from its own power pack)
EyeTV stays running  no problems.

So now all the USB ports at the back of the computer are full I still have
the ports on the keyboard for flash drives and iPhone synch and I can swap
between the EyeTV Hybrid and the printer at the short USB extension cable
if I want to use anything else, I will go buy a USB hub. As a final check,
with all USBs connected:

* With EyeTV software running unplug & re-plug the picture picks up
where it left off no problems.
* Quit EyeTV unplug & re-plug EyeTV launches (my preference setting) and
the picture picks up where it left off no problems.
* Quit EyeTV and restart the iMac - EyeTV launches and the picture picks up
where it left off no problems.

So, touch wood, it all seems to be running OK thank you VERY MUCH Kyle
without your specific order of actions I would have said I had done
everything there already!! I¹m not used to things being quite that touchy.

I¹m still not sure what is going on with the MacBook thinking it is
connected to a USB 1 bus but that is a problem for another day and seems
to be ³work-roundable² in a hit-and-miss sort of way and, at present, I
don¹t envisage much use with the laptop.

Thanks again.

Neil
