Hi All,
I am new to this community and this is my first post, I hope that
you could help
me making the last jump to be a real WO Developper ! ;)
Welcome aboard! It is an exciting time for WO development!
I have to design a DB connected web app and as I have a strong OO
background and had
the chance to work 6 month with WO, I can not imagine using an
other tool !
(tried rails, tapestry ... still not convinced ... I really liked
EOmodeler, WObuilder
and all the design philosophy !)
While Apple has recently depreciated these apps, there are some open-
source ones as part of WOLips that are far better integrated and
under active development with very fast turn-around on bugs and/or
feature requests. Design philosophy is unchanged, tools are improving
daily!
At this time, I was developping locally and don't had any idea
on how to deploy (and I still don't have any idea... ).
It is not much more difficult than developing. Once you have your app
working it is just a few steps to deploy it. There's always tweaks
here and there to get it running best under your configuration, but
out-of-the-box it works quite well.
I ve read a lot throught the various forums, but some doubts still
persist,
here what I want do and please tell me if this is feasible
(sorry if some question may seems newbie but I am NOT a web
developper):
1. Buy mac
2. Get WO5.3.x Dev free
3. Develop web app with all the cool stuff
--> are you using WOlips ? I remember it was really slow running
on mac ... ?
WOLips rocks, and if you used it under Eclipse 2, then it was likely
Eclipse slowing it down. It seems to run just fine on my PowerMac G5.
If you are buying a new Mac, then it will run it far faster than my
hardware.
--> I like strong typing, .... can i use java 5.0 with all the
generic stuff and just
avoid the buggy stuff (BigDecimal, ...) or is it too risky ?
--> Also, I want in the future to really improve the front end
design, is it sufficient to use
some WO tools or using iWeb or whatever tool is best suited ?
I'll leave this to the myriad of Web-Client developers. I'm working
on Java Client.
4. Deploy on linux or windows
--> For what I had understood reading posts, I can use a deployment
key found in some path somewhere
on the developent platform ?
Yes, the instructions (as well as LOTS of other useful info) can be
found at http://www.objectstyle.org/confluence/display/WOCOM/FAQ+on
+WebObjects
-->What do I have to install as (free)server on the deploy
platform ? tomcat ? what is the best ?
Is there a kind of Webobject runtime also to deploy ?, if yes I
have to buy this ? please help !
I'm currently deploying to Tomcat. When you deploy to a "Servlet
Single Directory Deploy" or as a "True WAR" all the WO frameworks
(the "runtime") are copied into the WEB-INF directory. (As a side
note, last time I tried I couldn't actually get "True WAR" to work,
but SSDD works just fine.) As long as you have put in the deployment
license key (see question 4 above) then it should work.
--> the most important is that I want to be sure that soon I buy
the mac I don't have to buy anything else
just develop, then deploy on a target deploy machine (linux or
windows) using this key !
That is my understanding. I _know_ it works, and I _understand_ that
it is free, but unsupported.
5. The app is functional, working and nice looking, let's enjoy it
but let's try to improve it
gradually with ajax and other web2.0 stuff
(I dont have a damn idea on how this work, okay this step is
optional ;) )
There is a bunch of really cool additions to WO over at ProjectWonder
(http://wonder.sourceforge.net/) including some really nice AJAX
stuff (http://www.mdimension.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/AjaxExample.woa).
It is under active development and new stuff seems to be added
regularly.
Thanks a lot for your feedback on this, this crucial for me that
I need to achieve at least to step 4 !
I hope this info helps, and again, welcome aboard! We can always use
more Davids on the list. :)
