1) Is hub definitely part of the new URL names ? What happens if I go to:

You'll get a 404.

Does hub have to be part of the new name ?

Yes, because the opensolaris.org and www.opensolaris.org hostnames are
already in use by the current portal and Jive, which both live inside
the same webserver. We'll be turning off the portal part, but Jive will
be remaining.

Huh? I would expect that the hub name is merely a transitional thing -
you wouldn't
want to fiddle with the live site during the testing phase - but that
the name when it
goes live will be www and that hub will disappear. This is the main
os.org website,
after all, and calling it something other than www seems plain broken.

Hi Peter -

When I asked this at the last website transition call, the website
team did not believe "hub.opensolaris.org" was going to be
temporary. They mentioned they look into it, but by AlanB's
answers here, it seems they either cannot or don't have the
time to do what many of us would consider the best option.

I don't find that and acceptable position. Getting a 404 because www. or no hostname is used is just not acceptable. This will cause people frustration and it will possibly drive people away from the OpenSolaris site.

It is pretty common for www.example.com and example.com to be where the main content of a site is.

Remember also that many browsers like to be "helpful" and insert http://www in front of things we humans type. Personally I don't care for that much but it exists and our site needs to deal with it, for the current and future URLs.

hub.opensolaris.org just looks strange and different.

Can we consider moving the Jive forums to forums.opensolaris.org ?

Have look at the websites for our peer communities such as FreeBSD, Fedora, Ubuntu.

I did a quick and dirty survey and they all seem to keep www. and the unadorned names working for most of the site. If they can do it so can we.
